Meanwhile, back at the office...

The operations and finance team are deep into it, counting ever little booklet, tape measure, DVD, vitamin and resistance band... it's the end of the quarter, and yes, EVERYTHING gets counted.

I wanted to thank the team, plus our auditors, for working hard through the weekend to make sure that this inventory would not impact our ability to ship product from weekend orders by Tuesday. So far so good!

Pictured on the ladder; Neil, Danny, Robert, and Heather.

Pictured around the table, waiting for numbers; Sofia, Helen, Louise, Ken (kinda looks like Ken's doing all the work here) and Traci (at least I spelled it right Traci!)

Fitness Camp Miami-Style

Beachbody's first official Tony Horton Fitness Camp concluded yesterday in Miami, Florida.

I missed it because my daughter Ava had her tonsils out, and the recovery was a more substantial commitment than I anticipated. (I am hoping to get a little sleep this week, if you know what I mean.)

So I sent an apology letter to everyone who showed up and a couple treats since I was a no-show. But the daily reports I got from Lara (our VP) sounded like not only was it another great event for fans of "all things Tony", but that SHE herself really got insight into what membership in the Beachbody community is about.

The itinerary was packed with exactly what you would expect from a Beachbody weekend fitness camp; "Circle of Love", seminars, feats of fitness, group fitness instruction, online friendships validated in-person, and an intense three-day focus on how good life feels simply when you take care of yourself and surround yourself with people who are doing the same.

Thanks to everyone who attended! And special thanks to Traci and Lara (pictured with Tony), Anna, Paul(Moodle), everyone at Beachbody who is working on these so we learn each time out, and of course, to Tony for sharing his enthusiasm and spirit with the community!

Keep your eye out of announcements on the next camps VERY soon!

Further to that last post...

Here is a recent post by Shantel, the object of that last bit of motivation, clearly "getting it":

Hey Pioneers..It's day 85 of P90. The 10K was today. I placed last out of everyone. My time was 2:07:35. I am proud of that. At mile 4 I was exhausted and ready to quit. I was dead last with the traffic police following behind me..and I didn't quit. There were times when I couldn't catch my breath..I thought I was having some kind of panic attack..I just prayed and told myself to "Calm down because I am not a quitter." There were so many hills that I struggled to get up..as soon as I'd finish one..there would be another. I had calf cramps and shin splints. I'm proud because I pushed myself beyond my pain (physical and emotional). When I got home I checked my HRM and it said I burned over 4600 calories. So I thought..well I can just go eat the Chinese Fried rice and two chocolate glazed Krispy Kreme donuts..I've earned it. I didn't. I ate baked chicken wings and salad.

Well..I'm tired..until later,
Shantel

You gotta love these people!

Whether you are logging into WOWY to do a Turbo Jam workout with Chalene Johnson's passionate posse, or staying focused for 90 days with a body carving round of Power 90 or P90X, the MyBeachbody community's pulse is driven by the commitment of its members to help each other succeed.

MyBeachbody coach Virgina runs a group online who are destined to graduate into the elite of Beachbody, the people who have lost 100 pounds or more. I was given permission to post this message below, written by one member to another. That's what we're talking about when we say "it's the online support makes the difference between Beachbody and the rest of the fitness industry!"

Shantel-

You are doing really great, don't get discouraged! You ARE on your way! Not so very long ago you were at 310 and now you are almost down to 300! Now if you weren't doing this every day and working so hard to be a better you, then you could be slowly creeping p to 312, 315......you know? Believe me, I understand! I want so badly to see the results I'm killing myself every day to get! I mean if there is no change then why AM I not just eating all my favorite bad for me foods? Why AM I drinking a Mango/Soy Milk/ Protein Powder/ Wheat Germ shake in the morning instead of having a yummy bowl of coco pebbles??? You know? Why AM I working out with Tony every morning and still I look down and there's my big belly??? I totally get how you feel. But I think that deep down we both know that it's a long hard battle for everyone on this message board. Everyone here loves food. Everyone here has spent at least a couple years avoiding exercise and the hard work it takes to eat right all (or most!) of the time. The very fact that you ARE doing this, the very fact that you ARE on this message board, the very fact that you ARE trying to eat better, change your life, and be healthy is amazing and you should be very proud! Do you have any idea how many people like us have just completely given up on ever looking and feeling great ever again in their lives? Have accepted the fate that there are only a few clothing stores they can ever shop in? Have decided that it's OK to feel tired and achey all the time? You and I and everyone else on this board have said NO WAY! We are not going to live our lives like that. WE have the power to make changes about the way we feel inside and out and we are all doing it! Slowly and sometimes painfully, but I know it didn't take me just 3 months to put all this weight on and I know I have to be patient because it will take me more than 3 months to get it off! So please Shantel, pat yourself on the back because slowly you are becoming stronger and lighter and healthier.

So little time, so many House Parties

A thousand Turbo Jam house parties on May 6th, to be exact! We're trying something completely new to get friends and neighbors to pull together to lose weight and get in shape in ten-day, Turbo Jam style!

Introducing the first ever Turbo Jam House Parties!
Beachbody is launching an initiative where 1,000 select Turbo Jam fans and their closest friends will get selected to throw house parties on May 6th and join Chalene Johnson in kicking off a massive ten-day Slim Down event from May 15th to May 25th.

Here's how it will work:

1. Turbo Jam customers apply to host their very own Turbo Jam House Party on May 6th inviting as many friends, coworkers, neighbors and clones to kick off their weight loss with a focused ten day effort using the Turbo Slim program.

2. What’s in it for you besides the “feel good” and peer support to achieve ten lbs of weight loss? The host gets a complete party kit, including a DVD with Chalene's personal instructions showing how she throws a house party, original TJ party soundtrack, and a DVD featuring Chalene for your guests to watch to get a feel for what they can achieve in ten days, a Beachbody backpack, plus the Turbo Jam workouts on DVD -- all free. Yes FREE!

3. Everybody at the party May 6th then gets psyched to launch into your ten-day Turbo-Slim-down. Then everybody starts the ten day challenge on the same day, May 15th.

Be A Star at The Exclusive House Party Website! At http://www.turbojam.com/HouseParty we'll feature photos, videos, party blogs and comments from our 1,000 super star TJ house party hosts. Chalene will post personal messages, tips, invitation suggestions and more at that website. And the photos will keep coming all week as people workout together, celebrate early success, and just plain jam it, "Turbo Style."

4. Ten days later, on May 25th everyone gets together again for the "weigh-out" house party. That's when the celebration continues as you and your friends see what's really possible when you all pull together, share accountability, and stick with your commitment. (And with just a couple months to summer, isn't now the time to kick your weight loss in high gear?)

And Chalene's actually coming over!
Of course, there's no way to keep Chalene at home when there’s a party goin’ on! The blonde sparkplug from the OC is flying to the weigh-In house party May 6th of the host who generates the most orders prior to May 1st. And then, the host who generates the most orders prior to May 15th will get a visit from Chalene at your party on the "Weigh-Out" day May 25th! How's that for motivation to get your friends motivated to go for it?

The Revolution Begins At Your House (at 30% off!)
This is a grand experiment, seeing if the community spirit of support and positive accountability we see online can spread with the same enthusiasm into your neighborhood. This could revolutionize fitness and weight loss. So to help make it happen we're giving each host a special discount promo code so the people who sign up can get Turbo Jam at 30% off. (We haven't seen that price since we launched this thing last summer!)

For more information, click here or log on to http://www.turbojam.com/HouseParty. (Sorry we can't accommodate everyone, but we want to make sure we get a sense of the impact and potential before or if we expand this beyond these thousand house parties.)

MyBeachbody Members Can Join In Too!
In the meantime, My Beachbody members can follow along with Chalene's intensive ten days of Turbo Slim motivation, live chats, blog and support in her corner of the site during the House Party promotion. So if you have the Jam, this is the plan: Lose up to ten pounds in ten days along with a thousand house parties all across the country -- that's something worth celebrating!!!

"In Case of Boredom, Break Routine"

For those of us who have been doing Power 90 sculpt since 2000, and still enjoy its efficiency of a total body circuit in around 40 minutes, here's a little tip if you want to get away from the TV; Set-up stations around the house so you move from station to station... kind of like you're creating your own "Curves" right in your house with push-up stands, the chin up bar and resistance bands.

I did that this morning, because I just didn't feel like standing in the same spot and staring at the wall. Here's my made-up circuit, ten sets in 45 mins:

Bedroom: Push-ups - 10 reps (with Power Stands)
Guest room: Pull-ups - 5 reps (with P90X door chin up bar, multiple hand positions)
Downstairs Living Room: Biceps - 10 reps (with Green B-Lines)
Stairs: Legs - (15 steps) 10X up/down
Upstairs hallways: Abs - 20 reps (Ab ripper sequence)

I was drenched and beat after ten sets. I wouldn't advise this for a beginner, because it's helpful to have your video-trainer talking you through proper form. But "in case of boredom, break routine". Setting it up around the house made it interesting and took my mind out of it. I think I'll introduce Ava to it tomorrow morning as a psuedo-obstacle course. Should be fun!

A busy week, and a $5,000 winner

This week we started testing the new Power 90 Fat Burning Express show, shot more footage for the Slim in 6 revision (with Beachbody standout Traci Morrow playing the role of "fitness demonstration pixie"), shot a great testimonial for Yoga Booty Ballet featuring celeb YBB devotee Tori Spelling, secured an airdate to launch Kathy Smith's Project YOU on QVC on March 29th at 11AM ET, and started development of a new promotion for Turbo Jam which is going be announced in the next few weeks... plus worked on a few hundred other things.

But the fun part of the week is announcing the winner of February's $5,000 MyBeachbody Scavenger Hunt, Fabbecky, who not only was selected to win from all the entries received, but is a success story in her own right, having lost 32 pounds since she got started with Beachbody!

The contest was an interesting experiment. About 300 people played each day. 70% of the answers submitted were correct. The hardest question (which 37% of the people answered correctly) was:

Which trainer gives the tip to "Think Lean Protein"?
choices: Chalene Johnson, Steve Edwards, Tony Horton, or Debbie Siebers
> answer: Debbie Siebers

Easiest question (which 98% answered correctly) was:

Which type of information do we advise you to recorded in your private WOWY diary?
> choices: Exercise related, Diet related, Mood related, All of the above
> correct answer: All of the above

Most popular question (which 378 people answered)

One pound of fat is the equivalent of how many calories?
> choices: 3,500 calories, 3,000 calories, It ranges depending on your weight, 2,500 calories
> correct answer: 3,500 calories

(I wanted to add a question about "which of the two Beachbody co-founders is better looking?", but I got shot down... I maybe dodged a bullet there.)

Congratulations Fabbecky and everyone who won the $100 a day giveaway for playing. We'll working on some new fun ways to turn living a healthy lifestyle into cold, hard, cashola, so stay in touch!

Set Aside Some Dates!

We haven't finalized all the details, but I wanted to give you as much notice as possible to plan for these upcoming fitness camps with Tony Horton.

New York, NY: July 14, 15, 16

Los Angeles, CA: Aug 11, 12, 13

Chicago, IL: Sept 15, 16 and 17

As soon as we have the plans finalized, we'll announce the details and take reservations from the MyBeachbody members and then open it up to the rest of the community if space permits.

I am still hoping you will sign up for Tony's fitness camp in Miami March 31 - April 2, but if you can't make it to that one, it will be great to get together at one of these other events.

The Father-Daughter Dance

Last night it was the Malibu’s Who’s Who of fathers and daughters out for the annual Valentine’s Father-Daughter dance. It’s a ticket that’s so difficult to get that people were actually scalping them online and in the local Malibu weekly newspaper.

It's a fun time, preceded with a new dress and fancy hair and make-up appointment (for Ava), dinner, and then the main event; the big dance.

I’m writing about it here because, at one point in the evening, as Ava and I tried unsuccessfully to assemble one good “Macarena” and later faked it clumsily through “Born to Hand Jive,” I realized how much more fun it is to figure out moves like this when you have someone there to watch (and laugh at) you. We were sweating, jamming, and laughing at each other and the other dads as we barked in unison to "who let the dogs out?"

Later that night after Ava went to bed I thought about how so many people who get together to do Turbo Jam and Yoga Booty Ballet must have a similar experience, clumsily trying the moves first, celebrating together when they finally get it. (“Bad Kitty – Yeah!”) That's got to be a fun way to engage in body-transformation.

I think it’s possible that this is the attraction of the message boards too, where people can laugh together about how a move might appear if their were someone in the living room watching, or ask the questions about a move that they would otherwise be embarrassed to ask at a gym… “How do I swing my leg through to runner’s pose?”

I also imagine this is what we have to look forward to when we all go down to Miami for Tony’s fitness camp March 31st. We’ll be experimenting with some new moves, getting tips on the ones we never got right in the first place. And maybe someone can take me step-by-step through the Macarena.

Read the cover, you read the book

I love when a simple hook helps make it as simple for people to get results.

I experienced it when the simplicity of the 8 Minute Abs videos I produced sold a couple million copies, then got teased in TV sitcoms, the Tonight Show, and a movie.

Beachbody experienced it when Michi's ladder made food choices simple and people lost weight. And we saw it when a 90-day fitness program called Power 90 challenged people to focus on fitness and eating right, not for the year or the rest of their lives, but for just 90 days. The rest of their lives would be easier once they got 90 days under their belt.

I picked this book, "The 3-Apple-A-Day Plan" off the shelf at Barnes & Noble to find out what it was about, and it was such a simple hook, that I could understand how it would work for people: Eat an apple before each meal, and you'll lose weight.

To me, it makes the same sense as Atkins, Scarsdale, South Beach, and other systems that simply shake up our diet habits so we have to look at them... when you pay attention to what you're eating with the intent of reducing consumption, you lose weight. Doesn't matter if it's apples, lettuce, cabbage soup, or grapefruit; a change that brings more fiber and "good carbs." and less saturated fat and sugar into your diet will have a dramatic result to expedite your weight loss. It really is that simple.

Trouble for the author of this book is, the concept pretty much fit on the back cover of the book, where she describes how she got the idea from a weight loss client who came up with the idea, and lost a pound and a half of fat in a week. Coulda been a pamphlet.

A better title would have been: "Get full on anything healthy before you eat what you would have eaten otherwise, and you will lose a lot of weight and feel a whole lot better."

Then again, that might not have been as catchy.

Point is; keep it simple. Don't trick yourself into looking for the breakthrough - it's right in front of us: Eat more of the good stuf, less of the bad stuff.

Early AM Power 90 Sculpt Tip

If getting right out of bed for a resistance workout is as difficult for you as it is for me, I wanted to share a quick tip: Use the first round as a warm-up round.

This morning I wanted to do a Power 90 Sculpt workout at 6AM... not my favorite time to go for it to "max out". But when the alarm rang, instead of blowing it off, I decided that I would use the first round of moves for pure warm up. I did just ten push-ups, grabbed lighter bands than usual for the other resistance moves, and didn't go quite as low on the lunges.

The pay-off was that by round three I was ready for my maximum. As usual, once I was warmed up I went for it, maxed out to exhaustion on each move. And the way I felt for the next four hours, I think that was plenty.

So if the morning weights are intimidating for you because it's tough to go from sleepy-time night night to strainging like you're on the "muscle & fitness magazine" cover, make that first round a comfortable wake-up round, and save the hardcore sets for rounds two, three, etc.

Live in Miami, It's Tony Horton!

The email is going out today inviting MyBeachbody members to the first official Beachbody weekend event - TONY HORTON LIVE in MIAMI!. Members have the first right to attend, then if there's still room, we'll open it up to the community at large.

The event is Friday March 31st to Sunday April 2, and it will play out very similar to the fitness camps that Tony and friends have been staging for the past couple of years. The main difference though is Beachbody will be officially represented there so you can get product on site (special deals, of course) and we will set-up an interview station for people to give their comments on camera about the event, Power 90, Tony, etc. That video plus other video shots from the event (plus home video the customer submits) will then be part of what customers can use in order to be eligible for the $500 "video success story" cash, and expand our library of success stories.

I am going to go to Miami for that weekend to meet customers and their friends, to participate, and talk about some new stuff Beachbody is developing. I'm excited to see who signs up. (I do not promise to dance or yodel at the event, but you never know)

If you are inclined to join me/us, especially if you live in South Florida, I hope you sign up early, because space really is limited. The date of the next events in Chicago, New York, and LA will be announced in a couple weeks. Hope to see you there!

"Same Shirt ... Same Shot ... New Tom"

Okay. I am taking another liberty here, to show off. A while ago I mentioned the success of RESPONSE MAGAZINE editor as he put Power 90 to the test in front of audience of the direct response advertising industry's leading trade publication.

His latest editor's column just appeared, featuring his side-by-side before and after shots, and his brand new Editor's Photo. I have been in the infomercial industry for almost 18 years, and since this is the first coverage for something I have done... and it's positive... I have to admit I'm proud. (Here's the article, in case you're not a subscriber):

Dec 1 2005
Same Shirt ... Same Shot ... New Tom
By Thomas Haire

In the September issue of Response, I wrote about kicking off my test of the DR fitness product Power 90, a 90-day workout and food plan marketed by Beachbody.com that has been a resounding DR success during the past few years. Throughout the fall, readers have been able to follow my results in a monthly weight-loss chart (below).

I'm happy to report, and I'm sure Beachbody's Jon Congdon and Carl Daikeler are thrilled to read that upon my day 90 weigh-in, I lost a total of 37 pounds. At a weight of 201, that's nine pounds below my original goal of 210! At the same time, I trimmed six inches off my waist, more than five inches off my hips, two inches off my chest and off each thigh, and toned about an inch of fat off of each bicep.

Above, you'll see a new "Editor's Note" headshot. In it, I'm wearing the same shirt and standing in the same location as my previous photo that has appeared in the magazine since March 2004. However, as the folks around the office have taken to calling me, "Little Tom" appears to have lost a chin or two. While I am proud of the work I did to achieve my goals, working the Power 90 program also made me proud of how the DR industry can help people improve themselves with quality, trustworthy products. Power 90 doesn't promise magic. Yes, with the program you can make some dramatic changes. It gives you the tools, the motivation and the knowledge to transform and commit to a healthier lifestyle.
But what I liked best about it is the self-reliance and self-motivation it teaches. In the end, it is up to each Power 90 user to make the program work for his or her specific goals.

Haire reached his original goal of 28 pounds lost with 20 days remaining in the program. Over those next 20 days, he was able to drop his weight all the way down to 201 pounds, a total loss of 37 pounds.

Once again, Tom nailed it with his conclusion. This is why, if I see you at an event or in Hawaii, I have such a hard time accepting compliments on how the Power 90 program "changes lives". It's the people that make the difference. But when the right person, and the right motivation, and the Power 90 program all come together at the right time -- magic does happen. (I wonder if I could get Tom to commit to "Bring it" now with P90X?)

The Water Cooler Workout (aka "Pee Yourself Thin")

Yesterday I was visiting a friend at his office and I noticed that he hardly touched water the entire day. He has lost some significant weight due to a heart scare recently which forced him to get more active and eat better, but as I walked around his office, I got an idea that might help him accelerate his weight loss and improve his heart health all day long: More frequent trips to the restroom.

I went out and bought him a case of water. Then I gave him explicit instructions:

> Drink three to four bottles a day at the office - some people drink that in diet soda. Kick that habit. Drink water all day long. You'll learn to crave it after a day. It's good for your blood. It's great for your body.

> About once every hour you'll need to go to the restroom. Walk to the one that's 30 to 40 yards away from your office - and don't take your time - walk with some pep in your step. (I am a little jealous that smokers get a break from time to time. Now I think water drinkers deserve a little break as well.) Consider doing a couple "kegels" and you're really maximizing the routine.

> When you get back to your office knock out ten to twenty quick, but clean push ups, ten squats, or ten jumping jacks. Your choice. Ten is enough.

> Do that 8-10 times a day, and by my estimate you'll burn off at least an additional 200 calories a day - that's 1,000 calories a week, or close to 4,000 calories a month. That adds up to more than an extra pound of weight loss a month, plus the healthy and metabolism-supporting benefits of proper hydration, and the mental and physical benefits of getting active from time to time throughout the day.

Give it a shot this week. See how much more conscious you are of living an overall healthy lifestyle when you sprinkle healthy habits throughout the day as well. It will start to be part of who you are.

Where's Waldo?

Sorry I have not been updating this blog recently.

Here's why: The "weight loss season" is upon us, which crushes us operationally to keep up with demand, requests, and "issues". The entire team is focused on speeding up the website, which has been running slow over the weekend, and fixing some fixes-gone-wrong. in short... Management is not always glamorous.

The fun part of my job right now is this New Year's promotion inside WOWY... starting with the $1000 on Jan 1 to ENORRIS, and continuing with the $100 a day promotion - it's just that extra sizzle that makes logging in and working out a little more exciting. I love seeing the numbers grow as people realize their odds of winning are pretty spectacular!

I am traveling a lot in January on business, and I will keep updating this area as things happen. Next stop, Philadelphia to meet with the advisory board. If you see me running through an airport, please don't hesitate to say hi.

Happy New Year!

What a morning! We CRUSHED the previous WOWY record of 248 at once with 311 people logged in for their workout today. What a great showing!

Thanks to everyone who played - and don't forget that January is a month of action in WOWY with even more exciting stuff (especially for MyBeachbody members) through the winter/spring. It's gonna keep getting better - I promise!

Happy New Year everyone!

Merry Christmas

And so it's Christmas. What's it really mean?

It means one week to January first man! New Year's Resolution time. Ring up the sales!

Oh. No it doesn't. That's not what it means. Christmas is a day of giving... Of birth. (and for Mary, giving birth). So what's the CEO of a fitness company got to say about that in his blog?

Plenty! Because Mary's gotta want to lose that extra baby weight and yowza have I got a great six week program for her!

Oh. No. That's not what I want to say.

What I want to say is... On behalf of the Beachbody family, I want to wish you a very happy holiday and a joyful, merry Christmas.

And I'd like to urge everyone to extend the peace and truth we enjoy during this time of year to every day and to every action all year long.

Have a great holiday weekend!

What's With The Pricey Push Up Stands?

You might think we're coo-coo, offering push-up stands for almost $40 when we already sell a set for $19.95.

Well, yes. We are coo-coo. But once you touch these, you'll understand; we're coo-coo like a fox, and you'll want the Power Stands for your home gym too.

This is what happens when, a trainer that is passionate about what he does, has time between celebrity clients who complain about sore wrists, aching hands, etc from doing push-ups. He thinks. He thinks some more. He looks at the common push-up stands he uses which are standard. He thinks. He kicks them across the room. He invents. And the result is massive leaps of improvement. Not cheap, per se, but better... remarkably better.

Tony went to work with the tooling folks and manufacturers, filed a patent application, and when they finally met his very narrow specifications, he had created the most heavy duty of all push-up stands in the land.

Now you're thinking "Ok. They're great push-up stands. So what?" Here's so what: Push-ups are an incredible chest resistance exercise, with multiple variations and dynamic benefits. The core benefits are often overlooked, but for anyone who wants to generate power throughout their physique, it's not generated by laying on your back and pushing a barbell into the air, it's by linking the entire muscular system using functional power moves - in this case, moves focusing on "push" from the chest. If you ever contemplated putting a barbell set in the basement (or, dare I say, a "Bowflex") think again about the value of these push-up stands for $39.95 and the core-strengthening/calorie burning benefits of push-ups that engage more than the pecs in your chest resistance workout. Synergy is what makes a workout ultra-productive. Now add the extreme comfort of these new stands, and we don't look so coo-coo anymore.

I'm making the point in this much detail because it's a little too much info for a simple sell page page online. But the blog is my little fiefdom, so this is where I can make it clear that: If you want to have a lean, solid core and a chest that is built and ripped, push-ups are THE way to get there. If you're going to invest in hundreds - if not thousands - of push-ups, these Power push-up Stands are a must. 'Nuff said.

WOWY Live -- aka "Fitness Camps"

In my chat the other night I announced that we would be scheduling at least four live weekend events in 2006. We are calling them "WOWY Live" events since the principal point is to get people together to workout with Tony Horton and other Beachbody trainers.

The basic plan looks like this:

Miami, FL - April
Chicago, IL - June
New York, NY - July
Los Angeles, CA - August

Specific dates and itineraries will come together in the next few weeks.

As we see how these weekends go we'll decide how many more to put on the schedule (if any). Based on past events that Tony has staged with members of the community, I am expecting them to be a huge success and a great place to learn directly from WOWY members and customers what's working and what's not, as well as a great forum to announce new initiatives/offer specials on product, etc.

Since space will be limited, we will offer reservations to MyBeachbody members first, then promote them to the rest of the database if space permits.

People Make It Happen

I could write volumes about the quality of the staff at Beachbody and Product Partners and I'd still never totally capture the enthusiasm, professionalism, and team culture that you can feel when you step through the door.

Last night was our annual holiday blow-out, which has come a long way since the very first dinner Jon Congdon, Rich Saitsky (our first VP of finance and operations) and I had at an Italian restaurant where we actually chose the wine off the menu based on how many airings of the Thin Thighs Guaranteed spot were playing that week on the Great American Country cable network.

It's a different story these days with a company of over 60 people celebrating our growth and the legions of satisfied successful customers.

Pictured here are a fraction of the people (and in some cases "their people") who make Beachbody work. There are a hundred others I wish I had photographed as the night turned into another showcase of dance moves and outtakes. (I'll consider posting the company video Robbie and Rick put together on this blog, once I clean it up a bit)

The bottom line is, there was a lot of love in the room, and a lot of relief that 2005, a transition year for the company, will soon give way to the promise of 2006. It's my job to make sure that this team has the resources and leadership to do what they do so well; Making Beachbody the leading innovator of in-home fitness programs and online support.

Power 90 Never Stops

This is one of those posts that reads like a sales pitch. But, honestly, I am just so proud of this product, I am indulging myself.

We're in the final stages of shooting the next Power 90 infomercial this week, and the amazing-train that is Power 90 continues to chug down the Beachbody tracks. I just got done interviewing Alli Cormier on camera, a woman who lost 55 pounds at age 44, as she gets teared up about trying EVERYTHING else on TV including a litany of fad diets, only to fail over and over again. But when her husband Gil suggested Beachbody and specifically Power 90 she found real success. 55 pounds with Power 90? A product that sells on TV for less than a hundred bucks. Come on!

Randall Joiner has lost 140 pounds at age 33. He decided to get fit with Power 90 when he was at an amusement park and couldn't fit into one of the rides because he was too large. From no exercise at all, Randy took on Power 90 and the B-Lines to turn things around. His favorite aspect of the program was that the nutrition guide never told him he couldn't enjoy his favorite foods. That's what I'm talking about!

Craig Pincus is a chef who lost over 60 pounds and reversed an awfully high cholesterol problem! He went from a 38 waist to a 31. He used to have foot pain -- gone! -- now that he's not carrying all the weight. He made a great comparison in his interview to how he could pay hundreds of dollars a year on prescription meds, but instead, for less than a hundred bucks, he got healthy with Power 90 and kept the prescription money in his pocket.

Chris Girard lost 135 pounds with Power 90, motivated by medical problems and inspired by the real success stories and real promise of success of Power 90 which he saw in the last infomercial. He even lost 30 pounds in his first 30 days! He kept his motivation throughout the process by taking his progress photos every 30 days, and turning to the support community for encouragement (you guys rock!). Some of the moves were not easy at first, but he used Tony's modifiers to make it work for him while his body got stronger. He calls himself a walking billboard for the program, a product that cost him less than a hundred bucks which saved him thousands in future medical costs, and added years to his life. The emotional outpouring when he described his joy in being free to once again play with his 8 - yes 8 - foster kids was enough to get the entire crew sobbing.

It was another fun week, where we got to enjoy the people that make Beachbody a success of the most important kind. The stories which we heard from the Beachbody community over and over this week inspired us all, from Diva, Johana, Debbie, Brent, and the rest, and remind me to be grateful for how fun and important the work we do is.

I would be very surprised if the Sauna Belt, Bun and Thigh Machines, 6 second Abs, or even gastric bypass surgeons would ever get passionate testimonials like this. I am grateful for the amazing effort of these people and anyone who has join the healthy lifestyle we are advocating with Power 90.

As Chris Girard said: "I was 400 pounds. If I can do it, anyone can do it. The key is, you have to commit yourself to the program, to living this healthy lifestyle. Then, it absolutely will not fail."

Perfectly said Chris. This product has overcome the long odds of being a TV success over and over again. When we first launched Power 90, we were told it looked like too much work. When we took people to Hawaii to celebrate their results, we were told we could never get a second hit out of a show featuring real people instead of fitness models and celebs. And after we celebrated our one-millionth customer we were told it was time to retire the brand and move on. We'll see. I think this program is right on the mark, and will show us again that the Tony Horton Power 90 machine has a long way to go, and a lot more people it can help.

Express Plans... Why They Matter

We just completed a couple new 6-day express test groups, and I am constantly amazed at the motivation people get from the numbers.

It is enlightening to hear someone bragging about losing "ten pounds in 6 days", especially when they fully understand that often much of it is water weight. It's that sense of accomplishing something - anything - that matters. You know you're on the right track when you stick with something and see results, results in both the stats and the way your body feels.

With the rising rate of obesity in the country, finding any traction on a solution that can affect real behavior change toward a healthier lifestyle is nothing short of a breakthrough. Society so easily embraces surgical and drug therapies for weight control. The science and medical industries are blindly entrusted with being the source of "new breakthroughs", and behavioral and psychological factors are largely dismissed.

But at Beachbody we're seeing proof that it's the other way around. When you succeed in the psychological battle, the physical benefits from healthy habits like eating and exercise follow. Not drug therapies. Not surgery. Not short term results this way - with long term maintenance that way.

Many of the people we interview have a lot of weight to lose. But with a dose of early success, they sound energetic, and for once engaged in taking care of themselves. But what is equally encouraging is they are also not fooling themselves. They know to lose more, they need to keep at it. They know they're not going to lose ten pounds every week. But they do see that to get results, they need to get toned and build metabolism-supporting muscle, and they need to continue to put the effort into meal planning to properly fuel the body. It's a snapshot of a healthy reality. Get a small taste of success, and the long term doesn't seem so difficult.

When we first launched the 6 day express concept under Slim in 6, we took a lot of heat from people who felt it was a sell out. But if you ask anyone who struggles with weight, the big hurdle between getting started on a healthy program or not is skepticism that all the effort will really pay off. So the 6 Day Express was the perfect way to launch people into a change of habits, without all the confusion that waits for you at every turn, with almost every click of your mouse.

I mean, just look at all these different diets listed on "AOL's Diet A to Z": 3-Hour Diet, 6-Day Body Makeover, 8 Minutes in the Morning, Abs Diet, Atkins, Blood Type, Body for Life, Cabbage Soup, Jenny Craig, Curves Online, eDiets, Fat Flush, Fit-for-Life, French Women's Diet, Glycemic Index, Grapefruit, Bob Greene Chic, Hamptons, L.A. Shape, LA Weight Loss, Living Low Carb, Nutrisystem, Dean Ornish Moderation!, Dr. Phil, Perricone Promise, Picture Perfect, Pritikin, Scarsdale, Slim-Fast, Step Diet, Solution Low carb, South Beach, Sugar Busters, Suzanne Somers, Weight Watchers, and The Zone.

Are you kidding me? Which one is supposed to be the "right one"? Read that list and one thing is so perfectly clear: Success is just not about a new diet breakthrough. It's about having simple tools to do the one proven thing that will reverse years of body abuse, and staying motivated to stay with it. All you need is a plan to:

1. Space your meals so you eat every three hours or so.
2. Eat enough to preserve your metabolism, but not so much you store more than you burn
3. Choose foods more so you properly fuel your body more than just trying to please your tongue.
4. Exercise with enough intensity that you burn excess calories but maintain muscle mass

And you need to be consistent for enough time to make a difference. That's what we are trying to inspire people to do at Beachbody. In ten days with Turbo Jam, Hollie Shillig lost 19 pounds. In 7 days with Yoga Booty Ballet, Fay Greene lost 7 pounds. With Kathy Smith's Project: YOU! Yuri Lowenthal lost 11 pounds in six days.

The short term results are impressive, but kind of meaningless from a health perspective until you look at how those express results foreshadow the overall success of using a healthy balanced program. Super model Kim Alexis lost 10 pounds in her first 6 days of Slim in 6, and a full 29 pounds by the time she completed the program! So many of the huge weight loss success stories we receive from real customers demonstrate the value of these express programs to the overall results.

So my point here is, an express program is a tool, intended to be an incredibly meaningful motivator when you need a motivator. If you EVER find yourself in need of a boost to get on track, as little as 6 days of focus can get you going. It's not cheating if it is the springboard you need to remind yourself how good it feels when you don't feel bloated, when you feel more energetic, and when you can really see that YOU are in control of your body.

So when the string of big holiday dinners draw to a close, kick yourself back into gear with your own express program, and see how quickly your body - and mind - respond.

Getting Ready For January

Here it is the first of December, and I'm already thinking ahead to the launch of the big "Body Transformation Season, 2006" that gets into gear on New Years Day.

I just got off the phone with the programmers and told them I want to launch the year with a $1,000 WOWY contest that will encourage everyone to get their photos into WOWY and kick the year off with clear intent that 2006 is the year of real transformation - lifestyle, body, and habits.

So in addition to a month long January initiative with specials and daily prizes, we'll be choosing someone (who has a WOWY photo) working out in WOWY on Jan 1st 2006 at 1PM ET/10AM PT to win $1,000 cash! (void where prohibited, like wherever you're not allowed to get paid just to workout)

We'll talk about 2006 more in future installments - but I personally intend to kick the year off with a solid commitment to stay consistent, and that day will be a critical point from which to launch.

I'm going in right now to schedule the WOWY session for that day (P90X Yoga-X, starting at 9:45AM PT) and I look forward to finding out who my Success Buddies will be! I hope to see you there

Gratitude

I am guessing the great Bloggosphere is filled with Thanksgiving lists of gratitude... and mine won't be any different...

I am one lucky guy, most of all because of the people that surround me, friends and family alike, especially a five year old named Ava. I am so grateful I have taken the time to get to really know her, because by doing so, I have gotten to know myself.

And I am so grateful for the people at Beachbody who maintain a culture of creativity, productivity, and fun. Everyone who walks into the place seems to say how impressed they are with the spirit and energy of the office.

I am grateful that the company we created, and the products that we distribute, have attracted the type of customers we call "the MyBeachbody Community". Honestly, it would not be fun to go to work if we didn't get to share in the smiles and successes of our customers. The community is where we get to hear what our work does for people - the important stuff. Sure there's the little issues of the business model we need to iron out. But when you hear about adults getting off diabetes and cholesterol medications, young women conquering eating disorders, kids crawling out of obesity, all with programs we distribute, it makes you swell up with pride. It gives me the perspective of what these programs mean, and reinforces our discipline to stay on task.

And for all of that I am grateful and more excited than ever for what is ahead of us.

Thanks to everyone of you!

Who is buying this stuff?

Big news! Looks like you can go ahead and sell your Power 90 on ebay. Return your Turbo Jam. Drag your treadmill and other equipment out to your next yard sale. Turns out, if you want to lose fat and inches fast, there is no need to exercise or eat right according the makers of the Velform Sauna Belt, MZ Direct Response.

"Will exercise give you fast results?... Not a chance!"

"You'll immediately see results with no effort!"

And from their website: "The Amazing new Velform Sauna Belt helps you to sweat away unwanted fat, eliminate cellulite, lose weight and ease muscle pain - all while sitting in the comfort of your own home."

Who watches that guy take the Sauna Belt off and believes he got those abs with that thing? And is the couple hundred bucks the model received for this shoot worth more than his self-respect? I just don't get it. This infomercial has climbed through the ratings chart from its recent debut, up to the top 15. Their media buyers are out-bidding other infomercial marketers to place the Sauna Belt show in prime media. They are positioning themselves for an enormous rollout in 2006. And from what we have heard, there are already knock-offs in development. So not only will you see ads for this one, there will be three or four copycats on the air promising results of "one inch in one hour". Does that media agency care so much about making their commission on this client that they are willing to further tarnish the already strained perception of the infomercial medium? And do the stations that accept this kind of advertising really care that little about their viewers? This business can be remarkably productive for generating customers, but not for long if the leaders in the industry as a whole don't use professional discretion.

"But how can they afford to even market this product?" you ask. "Haven't we already learned not to buy this stuff?"

Guess not... Because people are buying it. A lot of people are buying it. People didn't learn from the hundreds of thousands of units of "Ab Stimulator" belts sold three years ago which then got yanked off the market by the FTC. People didn't learn from the "Ab Roller craze" and subsequent "Ab Roller garage sale" craze years later.

No matter how many times the morning news shows and Oprah pronounce that the only healthy solution is "exercise and portion control", there will always be consumers looking for a short-cut, even if it's insane, and there will always be a new fast-buck company willing to scorch the earth under an entire industry for a one-off hit. That's the environment Beachbody is operating in. But we will not be deterred. We will always pursue solutions that work. We will always preach a message of a healthy lifestyle.

Look at this book shelf at a nearby Barnes & Noble. That's over 25 titles, each promising THE ANSWER to your weight loss needs. Each with its own unique twist, each with a promise of being the last book you'll ever need.

Different strokes for different folks. That's why we have multiple brands and solutions at Beachbody, from ten minutes a day, to six weeks, to 90 days and more. As long as the message is clear, and based on proven healthy principles, the innovation will continue. But they are all rooted in the same basic premise that you need to both exercise, and improve your diet choices.

One of the reasons that we adopted the "Decide. Commit. Succeed" motto is that it's important to carefully "decide" when choosing the solution that's right for you. Don't just follow the latest hot one you read about in People Magazine. Choose something that makes sense for you. If it doesn't make sense to you, then it's not for you, because you'll lose faith in it quickly. It has to make sense!

And of course, wrapping a piece of plastic and velcro around your waist doesn't make sense if you want to lose fat and inches and be healthy. Eating ONLY protein doesn't make sense. Popping a pill doesn't make sense.

I know Beachbody is not perfect. We have our own customer complaints. But never do we not get things resolved, and never do we actively set out to disrespect the customer. In case the folks at MZ Direct are reading this, as one businessman to another, wouldn't it be more rewarding to create wealth by helping people succeed and improve their lives? There's a lot of opportunity in the world. Choose the one that makes this a better experience for everyone, not the one that abuses the privilege for your own benefit.

What Am I Doing?

A few people have written to ask what my workouts consist of these days, so I figured I'd lay it out here.

With ski season approaching, my goal is to get my legs in shape BEFORE I get to the mountain, rather than to simply start skiing and wish I had gotten them in better ski shape ON the mountain.

While I have not set any specific travel plans yet, one of the best ski trips I've ever had was a boondoggle Jon Congdon, Tony Horton and I had in Aspen a couple years ago. (photo). It was a last minute trip and an absolute blast. From the small world department, we ended up running into Phil Jones and his wife Ashley from Pure Kauai who were in Aspen for the same weekend... totally random, and a lot of fun.

So - I am focusing on legs, butt, back (lower), and abs with a mix of upper body and cardio. Last night I did the new Power 90 Masters Series Plyo Legs. That's going to be a real staple to my training regimen for ski prep as I work toward getting in 50 hardcore leg workouts before I get to a mountain sometime in January.

If anyone wants to join with that motivation we could start a WOWY group. Let me know and I'll get it done!

The results are in!

As you might recall, in early October I mentioned how Thomas Haire, editor of the direct response industry's trade magazine "RESPONSE" had begun Power 90 to see if it could help him lose weight as promised in the infomercial.

Tom completed his 90 days last Saturday, and he let us know how he did:
Jon

I weighed-in Saturday morning (day 90) at 201, a total loss of 37 lbs. in 90 days. I went through the measurements the day before. I lost six inches off my waist and hips, and two inches off my chest and thighs. Toned up my arms about 1-1 1/2 inches also. The program worked wonders. You’ll see the before and after photos in the December issue Editor’s Note. My plan now is to get back into the gym, utilizing the circuit program I learned from the DVDs with free weights, while mixing in some of my own cardio with at least one day a week of the Power 90 cardio. Should continue working out about 5 days a week. As far as diet goes, I plan on splurging a little bit more than I did during the 90 days, but doing the program for those 90 days has changed how I see food and how I will approach my overall eating plan. I will definitely continue with the eating plan I learned from Power90. My goal now is to maintain my weight between 195-205. If I continue to see a loss, I could be convinced to shoot for 190, but my body type probably doesn’t allow for much more than that. It’s been an amazing, enlightening experience for me. I never would have believed I could accomplish what I did, and the program is so simple that, as long as you commit to it, you can’t help but do yourself some good. The thing I like about it the most from a marketing standpoint is that it is absolutely on the consumer to commit. The product delivers what it promises, but only if the buyer commits to the program. A buyer could never point the finger at the product and say, “This doesn’t deliver!”

Thanks so much!

Tom

Note: I happen to think Tom could get to his goal of 190 without a lot of extra effort, and I hope the word "splurge" doesn't back fire on him. According to some research, people who gain back five pounds or more are the ones who find themselves back on the slippery slope to gaining it ALL back, plus, plus.

A diet expert was in the office the other day and he said something that really nailed it: "You can do more damage in 3 minutes of eating than you can make up in three hours of exercise." While that might be an exagerration unless you're competing in a pie-eating contest, the point is clear: Weight maintenance requires lifelong eating habits that balance calories in and out. Splurging happens, but you can't let it creep into a three or four times-a-week habit. I think what's most important frankly, when considering the splurge, is that you remember how good it feels when you don't feel bloated, how good it feels when your clothes fit, how good it feels when you actually like your waistline. The splurge is much less appealing when you remember how much better "thin feels".

All work... is dull

In case you wondered whether we're all work over here at Beachbody, here's a copy of an email string that happened the other day when my assistant was out of the office and I needed to organize a coffee run...

This is dangerous, but… First person who emails me that they’re getting coffee across the street, I’ll buy if you pick me up a medium size dark roast.

Rick – This is the best cup of coffee I have ever had. Good work son.

You’ve got a bright future at this company. I am going downstairs to move Jon’s car so you can have his parking spot from now on. And see me later for a key, fluffy robe and slippers for our executive lounge and spa.

Relax everyone – Carl did give me the ten million dollars - but it was ten million dollars in “Beachbody store credit”. Anyone need a couple thousand copies of Power 90?

Sounds to me like you have already had too much coffee, easy on the caffeine Mr......

Carl -

As per our conversation in the Executive Spa, here’s the revisions I would make to our site.

Rick

P.S. Thanks for the foot rub.

P.P.S. Who is "Staff"? I see he is on all of these correspondences. Does he have the true power around here? If so, does he need some coffee too?
